Ierapetra Ierapetra Europe’s most southerly city, is also an excellent holiday town, its friendly locals make every effort to insure the holidaymaker has a wonderful time. The Old Town has much to offer with it’s Venetian Fort, a wonderful harbor, a Turkish Mosque, local Museum, you can even visit the house where Napoleon stayed, and the town an surrounding area is home to a wide range of archeological from the Minoans onward. The town is a wonderful base from which to visit this part of Crete, with it’s wide range of beaches, and turquoise seas it has swimming to suit all, sandy beaches or rocky coves, many of which are deserted even in high summer. If you hire a car you can travel to many secluded areas and into the mountains where you can experience the unique flora and fauna which make Crete such an interesting place to holiday. There are many villages close to Ierapetra: Koutsounari, Agios Ioannis, Ferma, Agia Fotia, Anatoli, Mithoi, Anatoli, Kalogeroi, Makrilia, Meseleroi, Myrtos, Males, Christos, Tertsa, Kavousi, Pachia Ammos, Kato Chorio, Kentri, Vainia etc. During the months of July and August the town is home to the Kirvia Festival, a celebration of local culture with Cretan music, and local cuisine (the healthiest diet in the world) very much on display, named after the towns first ruler. You can also enjoy excursions to Chrissi (Gaidouronisi) island, Myrtos tourist village and to other parts of the island. Local travel agents can assist you to get the most from your holiday, you could also visit mountain villages such as Agios Ioannis,a village popular with artists. There is a wide range of accommodation in and around the town from small hotels to rooms for rent to Villa holidays to camping, all are available around Ierapetra. To the east of town there is varied selection of holiday areas, the long beaches at Koutsounari and Ferma or the smaller bays of Agia Fotia, everywhere has something to offer, this area is also home to larger hotels and some resort hotels like Ostria Hotel, Arion Palace, Blue Sky, Sunshine Crete, and others such as the Elyros hotel in Koutsounari, to the Kakos Bay , with it’s beach taverna, and secluded beach. If night time is your time then the town has a good selection of bars restaurants, and café’s where you can enjoy excellent hospitality, some restaurants also organize Cretan Nights when local culture is on show, something not to be missed, later you can enjoy clubs and fun bars, where you can see the night through. For the mildest climate and most days of sun, in one of the most natural areas in Europe the South Coast of Crete may be the place for you.
